It's Simple-All Patients, All Problems, All the Time

Acute Care Ophthalmic Services

Over the years, eye care has come to become more an more out-patient based. Providing glasses and contact lenses have always occurred in the office setting, and more recently other outpatient services like LASIK have become common. Cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, retinal surgery and other things are now done as an outpatient far more than in the hospital.

Some problems remain hospital based, problems such as eye trauma, Retinopathy of Prematurity, serious infections, and congenital disease management are all initially addressed in an in-patient setting. This is where very specialized ophthalmic consultation is required. Many ophthalmologists (MD eye surgeons) lack the training or comfort level to offer this service. Dr. Rosenthal works with a specially committed group of ophthalmologists who are committed to providing excellent care for patients with these acute and often severe problems. With particular attention to providing just the right specialist for just the right patient, we cover these needs to The University of Toledo, the Mercy Hospitals, St. Lukes, and selected ProMedica Hospitals.

Pedictric Hospital Services

Inpatient pediatric eye care is particularly delicate and complex. Dr. Rosenthal provides care for premature babies with Retinopathy of Prematurity, a potentially devastating form of retina detachment sometimes encountered by these babies. He also consults on babies with congenital malformations, various types of pediatric trauma and child abuse, and other pediatric problems.

Academic Acure Care and Teaching

The doctors of the Vision Alliance are also the Division of Ophthalmology for the University of Toledo Medical Center. We provide acute trauma care at the UTMC emergency department, consultative care in the ICU’s and on the hospital wards, and we also train students and residents in various fields of medicine. Please look at the Academics section for more information.

Community Hospital Coverage

Because Vision Alliance doctors are among the best in the region, they are trusted to give the best care when it is most needed. Our doctors hold most of the leadership and supervisory positions at area hospitals and with an emphasis on their “home” institutions provide much of the consultation coverage for those hospitals. In particular, we provide coverage in the Mercy hospitals, St. Lukes, and selected ProMedica services.
